Client: InterRisk (Vienna Insurance Group)
Industry: Insurance
Project: Sales Platform IRON for InterRisk
Technology Partner: Decerto
Overview
InterRisk TU SA Vienna Insurance Group, one of the leading insurance providers in Poland, faced the challenge of modernizing its sales system, iPortal. In the era of digital transformation and rising expectations from both customers and agents, the company decided to develop a modern, intuitive, and secure insurance sales platform – IRON (InterRisk Online Network).
The project aimed to increase agent productivity, simplify sales processes, and deliver a system that genuinely supports day-to-day operations. Additionally, it was designed to serve as a foundation for InterRisk’s broader digital offering in the future.
The IRON platform was developed by Decerto, an experienced IT solutions provider for the insurance sector. Decerto built IRON from scratch using modern technologies and its proprietary solution, Higson – a business rules engine that enables fast and easy configuration of insurance products.
Key Project Scope
The MVP phase of the project included:
- Building the IRON platform from the ground up.
- Implementing Higson as the central configuration tool.
- Launching the first product – AUTO+ Package.
- Integrating with existing systems.
- Conducting full-scale security and performance testing.
The Role of the Higson Platform
Higson played a central role in IRON’s architecture, serving as a versatile configuration and rating tool. What does Higson enable?
- Product configuration – including dictionaries and insurance variants – fully accessible to business users without the need for IT involvement.
- Rating operations – all premium calculations are executed directly within Higson.
- Data mapping between systems – ensuring consistency and interoperability.
- User access and system parameter management – centralized control for system administrators.
Technologies and Methodology
The project leveraged the latest technologies:
- Java 21 – primary programming language.
- Kubernetes – microservices-based architecture deployed in a containerized environment.
- Oracle – database solution.
- Agile methodology – iterative value delivery, continuous stakeholder collaboration, and ongoing improvement. The project team included 14 Decerto's specialists and around 60 specialists from InterRisk and VIG PL.
Project Challenges
Modern Architecture
While microservices and Kubernetes are becoming industry standards, not all organizations have experience with such advanced infrastructure. Implementation required deep technical expertise and a meticulous approach.
Automation of Development Processes
The project introduced automation for dependency updates and other CI/CD components, significantly improving code quality and stability.
Integration with ESB
Connecting to an external Enterprise Service Bus (ESB) posed technical challenges that required the creation of custom integration solutions.
Outcomes and Business Benefits
IRON is already actively used by InterRisk (Vienna Insurance Group, VIG). Its main advantages include:
- Intuitive and ergonomic interface – designed with UX principles and a minimalist approach.
- Fast performance – instant quote calculations and real-time variant comparisons.
- Automation and time savings – automated customer data retrieval, image compression, offer dispatch directly from the system.
- High security standards – including two-factor authentication compliant with the DORA regulation.
- Flexibility – business users can configure the system independently.
IRON is also a growth platform – upcoming features include:
- Home insurance products.
- Underwriting module powered by Higson.
- Renewals module.
End-User Involvement
A key success factor was close collaboration with InterRisk’s (Vienna Insurance Group, VIG) intermediaries (agents, OFWCA) and sales managers. Over 170 of them took part in workshops, prototyping sessions, testing, and iterative reviews, helping to create a system tailored precisely to InterRisk’s (Vienna Insurance Group, VIG) needs.
Voices from Project Leadership

Conclusion

The project demonstrates that strong collaboration between IT and business – along with active involvement of end users – can result in a solution that not only meets expectations but truly transforms the way an organization operates.
